We enjoy facilitating and supporting education and public outreach activities within Scott County -- providing a network of knowledgeable staff and volunteers who support and help carry out the goals of the District.

Whether it's a school research project or a classroom presentation, our staff can provide opportunities for education on erosion-control and natural-resource protection in our county.

Conserve It!

Schools in Scott County have a number of environmental activities to choose from throughout the year. Whether it’s Outdoor Education Days or Children’s Water Festival in the fall, we try to reach out to students interested in conserving our water, soil and wetlands while protecting wildlife habitats in our state. If your school wants to plant trees or install a raingarden, we can also help students and other youth organizations choose the best varieties and plan the most ideal locations.

For more information on student learning activities, contact Communications Specialist Diane Hrabe.

  Children's Water Festival
Our District is a partner in this annual festival held at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul. Organized for children in the metropolitan area of Minneapolis/St. Paul, the festival’s purpose is to educate fifth-grade students about our state water resources. Volunteers present the students with ways they can help ensure a future where both the quantity and quality of water resources are protected and managed wisely.
  Junior Envirothon
The Junior Envirothon is a competitive event for middle school (grades 6 to 8) teams of four to five students to compete in natural resource knowledge, hands-on field day against other middle school teams. Resource subject areas are aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and a current environmental issue – Protecting Groundwater was the current issue for 2010.
  Senior Envirothon
This problem-solving natural resources competition is geared toward high school students (grades 9 to 12). Teams of five students from the same school/organization may participate. Schools/organizations may bring more than one team if space is available. Teams compete against other schools/organizations for prizes, and the chance to attend the State Envirothon.
  Outdoor Education Day
In its 26th year, the Outdoor Education Day Program is an annual fall event sponsored by the Scott SWCD. It provides an outdoor classroom/environmental learning experience to fifth--grade students in Scott County.
  Volunteer Stream Monitoring Program
This program originated at the Water Resources Center at the University of Minnesota in 2000. It was designed to support, strengthen and coordinate volunteer stream monitoring in the seven-county Twin Cities Metropolitan Area by involving student and citizen volunteers in monitoring benthic macroinvertebrates.
